If you’ve spent any time in our Montecito courtyard, you know it’s a place where time slows down. Between the hum of classic engines and the coastal sun, there is a shared appreciation for things that aren’t just made, but built to endure.
But The Homer Journal was created to take you beyond what you see from the sidewalk. To understand Homer, you have to look at the hands that guide it and the heritage that fuels it.
The Vision: A Legacy Reimagined
The story of Homer began with a question of legacy. Our founder, Terry Pillow spent decades at the helm of global icons like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama. After a legendary career defining American style for millions, he returned to his roots to create something deeply personal. Named after his father and grandfather, Homer is Terry’s tribute to "worn wisdom"—the idea that a product should get better with age, just like a good story.
The Hand: A Third-Generation Craft
While Terry provides the vision, Steven Soria provides the soul of the handwork. As a third-generation leather artisan here in Santa Barbara, Steven’s lineage is stitched into the very fabric of this town—his family’s saddles are literally part of local museum history. Steven bridges the gap between classic sculpture and functional art, ensuring every "Homer Maker" piece carries that distinct, bench-crafted weight you can’t find in a factory.
The Source: From Italy to Montecito
The journey of a Homer bag doesn't start in our workshop; it starts in a family-run tannery in Italy. We’ve searched the world for a specific kind of vegetable-tanned leather—a material that breathes, ages, and develops a patina unique to its owner. By working with tanners who have spent generations perfecting their chemistry, we ensure that the "British Tan" you see in the sun today will look even more beautiful ten years from now.
This Is Just the Beginning
Whether it’s a deep dive into the specific silver foil we use for our embossing or a spotlight on a local craftsman, this journal is where we celebrate the details.
We invite you to join us as we pull back the curtain on the craft, the community, and the characters that make Homer what it is.
Welcome to the journey.
